Today was the big Japan Earthquake of 2011. We were in Ibaraki Prefecture, north of Tokyo to take wedding photos. Masami was all done with make-up and we were about to get started when the earthquake hit. It wasn't terribly strong, but it was unusually long. News came in quickly that it was an off shore earthquake and the magnitude was 8.4 (later revised to 8.8 and again to 9.0). As a precaution all the stores shut down and we had to use the emergency exit. We headed home and turned on the news. The earthquake shook the family's fishtank enough to splash water out, some of which knocked out the internet router. We couldn't get online until we got a new one the next day.
This is a view 2 days after the quake. Nothing really happened in Tokyo, but there was a run on food. We went out to eat.
Fears of a fuel shortage lead to a run on gas stations. This queue was two blocks long. Many stations sold out. I saw one station that decided to price gouge at 3000 yen / liter, or about $140 / gallon. All the other stations were selling at a normal 150 yen or so. Hopefully that's illegal here as it is in the states.
We're in the newly renovated park behind Oji Station.

A big shared birthday party. We had sushi, pizza, and KFC. The afterparty was a Mario Cart tournament.

This is the new Tokyo Sky Tree. It just reached it's full height this month, but won't be completed for another year.
